The Influence of Attitude Towards the Subject of Chess on the Success of Solving Chess Problems: Results of Multidimensional Modeling

Abstract

Relevance. In recent years, many studies have highlighted the impact of attitudes or beliefs towards academic subjects on academic success. However, there is a lack of research on students’ attitudes towards chess as a general education subject. This study aim is to explore how students’ attitudes towards the subject “Chess” affect their ability to solve chess problems. Materials and Method. The following research methods were used in the study: questionnaires, testing of chess knowledge. An original questionnaire was developed for 5th grade students who had been studying chess for 3 years. The questionnaire covered topics of chess playing experience and attitude towards chess. A sample of 478 students was randomly formed proportionally to the number of 5th grade students in 10 regions of the Republic of Armenia. Result. The study identified five significant factors influencing the success of solving chess problems. These factors cover a number of psychological and motivational aspects of attitudes toward learning activities: the perception of chess as a complex subject, focus on grades, a negative attitude toward chess lessons, responsibility and a positive attitude, and inadequate self-assessment of chess knowledge. Based on the results of the study, practical recommendations are offered for teachers and curriculum developers.
