Values and Attribution Processes in Social Cognition

1546

Abstract

The paper presents outcomes of a study which focused on the possible coexis- tence of a variety of diverse values in individuals. The following hypotheses were advanced: 1) values affect the course of attributive processes in the individual; 2) value congruence (the extent to which one's values and behavior coincide) affects attributive processes in the individual. A method of role-play simulation of experi- mental situations was used in the study. The outcomes of the study demonstrated that the initial hypotheses were partly correct, and revealed that the influence of different values on the individuals' attributive processes was not identical. It was suggested that a meta-level may exist which is acquired by the individual along with the contents of the values.
