Psychological reactions and predispositional factors in patients with concomitant and multiple somatic trauma suffered as a result of illegal actions

Abstract

The article is devoted to the connection between the circumstances of getting multiple and concomitant somatic trauma and psychological reactions of the injured, as well as predispositional factors. We hypothesized that the victims of the violence will have a higher level of depression and aggression, as well as other type of coping strategies. In addition, we assumed a link between attribution of guilt for what has happened and the level of depression and aggression. An empirical study to test these hypotheses was conducted on the basis of Department of combined and multiple injuries, N.V. Sklifosofskiy Institute of Emergency Care. The study involved men injured as a result of illegal actions (N=38), and men suffered as a result of illegal action (N=38). The study revealed that patients who were injured because of violence, show an average lower level of aggressiveness. And patients who are victims of violence and blame themselves, are more aggressive than those who accuse others; the former show higher intensity of depressive feelings. Patients who are victims are less inclined to the use of coping strategies such as confrontation, positive reappraisal and search for social support.
