Abstract

The purpose of the contribution is to consider the specifics of conflicts in classes with mixed ethnocultural composition. Basing on the concept of L. Berkowitz, the contribution shows that conflicts in such class are caused not by different cultural backgrounds, but by deprivation of any significant needs of students. A conclusion is made that under such condition it is meaningless to talk about the need to develop tolerance among students. An alternative way is to deal efficiently with the formation of emotional literacy of students, so that they are able to understand themselves and to cope with their feelings. However the cultural background has great influence on the progress of conflict. We can conclude that if there are ethnic minorities in the class, they will with high probability create an in-group. If the in-group members belong to a more collectivist culture than the out-group, the group will become an integral part of their personality. The probability of intergroup conflicts in this situation is increased.
