Intermodal Resemblance as a Result of Categorization

In this study we present the results of the psycho semantic research of perception of the objects of different modality. In these two series of experiments, it is showed that the fundamentals of the experience of subjective resemblance of objects of different modality (intermodal generality of sensation) is presented by modal-nonspecific processes, connected with the depth, emotional richness and a more early, genetic level of categorization – emotional generalization. In the first experimental series we studied perception of color and form, in the second series of experiments our stimuli were musical fragments, line drawings and verbal designations. Results obtained from different stimuli confirm the existence of a unique mechanism of generalization and allow one to indicate its universal nature. In addition, unique characteristics were sorted out in the process of research inherent to all sensations – intensity and quality, which are connected with the origin of subjective experience of resemblance.
