Function and Dysfunction of Borders I: the Effects of Self-Organization and Self-Disorganization System
Abstract
The article is aimed to define and to specify the functions and dysfunctions of psychological boundaries as a self-organizing system. The system of “I” boundaries is described as dynamic, open and holistic function of interaction between “I” and “not-I”. Systemic-structural construction of boundaries explains their emergence, interaction, mutual assistance, compensation and self-healing. Regulation of boundaries is described as advisable to implement functional unity of the potentials of the individual. Object of regulation are boundaries’ functions. The aim and results of self-regulation is optimization of boundaries functions to provide subjectively meaningful interactions of “I” and “not-I” and to achieve self-efficiency. Incoherent interaction of functions and dysfunctions of the “I” boundaries is performed as a synergetic construct of self-organization and self-disorganization processes. Self-organization is correlated with the actualization of purposeful self-regulation. The personal inability to manage his or her psycho-emotional tonus, disturbance of information-energy metabolism, infantilism, nonequilibrium and the persistent instability of the boundaries system are the factors of self-disorganization.
