Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) on the Russian-Speaking Sample of Oncology Hospital Medical Workers

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of cross-cultural adaptation of psychodiagnostic methods. Current approaches and techniques recommended to achieve qualitative result of adaptation are considered, as well as the difficulties that researchers may face in the process of its implementation. The aim of this work was to consider the stages of the cross-cultural adaptation process using the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) as an example, as well as to verify the factor structure of the Russian version of the questionnaire. Materials. Approbation was carried out on a sample of employees of cancer hospitals (n=142), the average age of respondents was 38,88 (SD=12,71) years. Results. The analysis of reliability (consistency and stability) of scales obtained as a result of factor analysis indicates the fundamental applicability of the construct of early predictors of job burnout in the domestic sociocultural environment. At the same time, only a partial coincidence of the factor structure of the original construct with the factor structure obtained during the validation on Russian-speaking population was revealed. The greatest coincidence is noted for the factors “Community”, “Workload”, “Values”. Conclusions. The need to create an original measure, only conceptually related to the construct of early burnout predictors, is being discussed. Identification of transcultural differences in the perception of the working environment acts as an independent vector of further research.
