Language in the Structure of Ethnic and Religious Identity of Chechen and Ingush People

Abstract

The paper presents results of an analysis aimed at revealing the role of language in the structure of ethnic and religious (confessional) identity of Chechens and Ingush. The research data indicates that for the vast majority of the respondents native language is Chechen and Ingush respectively. According to the respondents, native language is a fundamental ethno-differentiating and ethno-integrating factor and a key cultural value as well. The extent to which the respondents have acquired their native language varies across the sample: some speak a mixture of Chechen and Russian or Ingush and Russian languages, and some are not able to write in their native language. Arabic language acts as a marker of religious (confessional) identi- ty and a means for religious communication in ethnic groups practising Islam. It is quite common for Chechens and Ingush to use arabisms when speaking both their native language and Russian — it is an established practice with a long history. All in all, the linguistic landscape of the Chechen and Ingush societies is marked by signifi- cant language diffusion and mixing.
