The contribution presents the modern researches of western and Russian scientists , which are devoted to the problem of gender identity disorders (GID), the results of the latest researches of GID at the junction of sexology, psychiatry, neurology, endocrinology and clinical psychology. It examines the peculiarities of cognitive processes of persons with early manifestations of GID, the important aspects of social adaptation, the necessity of psychotherapeutic support, the problem of standartization and improvement of criteria which are necessary for passport and surgical gender correction. It also analyses the genetic, epigenetic and environmental influence on gender differences in social behavior, the clinical peculiarities of patients with GID. The peculiarities of mnestic activity of persons with GID in the process of treatment with androgynes, interrelation between self-perception and denial of traditional masculine and feminine characteristics are described. The authors discuss the possibility of dividing the transsexuals into types as well as the social and legal aspects of GID. The contribution analyses the relation of atypical development of gender identity and mental health. The presented data may prove interesting for specialists who take part in examination and rehabilitation of persons with GID, in particular, transsexualism.
