Interrelation of Pupils’ Choices at the Stage of Pre-Specialization Training and Subsequent Specialization Education

The article discusses the introduction of profession-oriented education in Russian schools. The goal of the study was to determine the interrelation of pupils’ choices at the stage of pre-specialization training and subsequent specialization education in different groups of students. Our main hypothesis was that there is an inconsistency in the choice of an individual intake of pre-specialization courses in the 9th grade and subsequent choices of specialization courses in the 10th and 11th grades. The absence of such a discrepancy among the students who are not ready to make a choice can change the individual educational route that may further lead to a choice of profession, which is not in accordance with the student’s own wishes and abilities. In particular, we hypothesized that this discrepancy is most pronounced in underachieving students and that the attitude to such a mismatch differs among students, their teachers and parents: students are taking it more positively, while teachers and parents - negatively. The study involved 120 people (among them students of 10th-11th grades of profession-oriented schools, their parents and teachers). The profession-oriented diagnostic tools, personality questionnaires and surveys were used in the study. The study confirmed the likelihood of distortion of individual-educational route. Some students believe that pre-specialization courses and specialization education should be congruent and thereby they reduce the number of possible pre-specialization trials (and not getting a diverse experience) and, therefore, restrict the possibility of making a more aware and independent choice in accordance with their own desires and abilities.
