The practical aspects of setting up and operating a psychological service in pediatric oncology/hematology

Abstract

This paper describes the development experience of the psychological service in severe pediatric somatic medicine in Russia. Basic goals, targets and principles of the clinical psychologists' work in pediatric oncology/hematology field, including both clinical and organizational aspects, are presented. The variety of difficulties, as well as their potential reasons and solutions, that a psychologist (as a part of the multidisciplinary team) may face rendering the assistance to patients, their family members or medical stuff are discussed. Authors describe the specific character of the setting during the in-patient treatment, and raise the question about appropriate methods of work and their modification, connected both with special aspects of existing goals and the treatment processes organization.
