In memory of Vladimir P. Zinchenko

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vladimir Zinchenko, professor, academician and our long-time editor-in-chief of the journal of Cultural-Historical Psychology.

Vladimir Zinchenko, son of the famous Soviet psychologist Pyotr Zinchenko, graduated from the department of psychology at the Moscow State University in 1953. In 1957 he completed his PhD study on action and perception and proceeded with the research, becoming doctor of sciences in 1966.

Psychology of perception was only one of his research interests: as a matter of fact Vladimir Zinchenko became one of the founders of Russian engineering psychology, organizing the first engineering psychology laboratory in USSR at the Scientific Research Institute of Automatic Equipment in 1967. In 1969 Vladimir Zinchenko became head of the ergonomics department of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Technical Esthetics where together with Vladimir Munipov they carried out extensive research in ergonomics. This was followed by his decision to organize the chair of work psychology and engineering psychology at the faculty of psychology of the Moscow State University in 1970. Among the results of his activities in this field was a series of highly influential publications on engineering psychology and ergonomics.

Vladimir Zinchenko taught in many universities in Russia and abroad and was awarded many academic degrees.

In 2005 he was among several scientists who initiated the journal of Cultural-Historical Psychology published by the Moscow State University of Psychology. From that year on and until his last days he remained the journal’s editor-in-chief.

Vladimir Zinchenko died on Thursday, February 6, aged 82. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
