The Problem of Personality in Peter Ya. Galperin's Scientific Legacy

2051

Abstract

Peter Ya. Galperin did not develop a comprehensive theory of personality; however, as the author of the general psychological theory, he was undoubtedly concerned with various fundamental problems and with issues related to personality psychology in particular. Drawing on Galperin's written and oral presentations as well as on his archival materials, this paper aims to single out Galperin's statements referring to personality psychology and to represent them as a system, fairly abstract, but altogether quite rigorous and well-organized. The paper also reveals how Galperin's notions about personality changed over the course of his professional life. Galperin emphasized the leading role of psychology in the complex study of personality and set forth some gen- eral ideas concerning the freedom and the development of personality that are not only of historical and psy- chological significance. It can be argued that Galperin raised certain issues which are of principal value for our science and related branches of knowledge and identified some important aspects of personality psychology which can serve as orienting points for future and contemporary researchers.
